13a185def2 Remove CLI / libsquoosh (#1321)
Unfortunately, due to a few people leaving the team, and staffing issues resulting from the current economic climate (ugh), I'm deprecating the CLI and libsquoosh parts of Squoosh. The web app will continue to be supported and improved. I know that sucks, but there simply isn't the time & people to work on this. If anyone from the community wants to fork it, you have my blessing.

65ea02627b Expose Typescript types in libSquoosh (#1142)
* Expose type declarations in libSquoosh npm package

* Add comment on why we remove the tsbuildinfo

* Fix PreprocessOptions type

Resize should require at least one of the width, height.
The other options are optional for all preprocessors

* Update libSquoosh README to reflect encode changes

I also removed requiring `await image.decoded` call before calling
preprocess or encode since they decode the image before the operation

e6810059ef Add warning for using multiple image pools
Instantiating and using multiple image pools is not intended and can
lead to memory problems. Instead, users should use a single pool and
reuse that pool across all image processing. Therefore, let's add
a warning in the README to specify call this out and avoid users
of running into issues.

Relates to #1065

129b925098 Fix Husky pre-commit
By upgrading to version 7, we now ensure that NPM/Yarn will run
the `prepare` script and appropriately install Husky. This also
migrates us to the `pre-commit` hook as a separate file, rather
than as part of the `package.json` definition.

9663c23489 Merge pull request #1151 from ergunsh/improve-encode-types
Improve `encode` API and its types
2021-09-17 13:50:29 +01:00
95a1b35c91 Update encodedWith to contain resolved values
We already await the promises that we set on the `encodedWith` instead of setting already
resolved promises to `encodedWith` we can set the resolved values

So, the users can use like
`const { mozjpeg: { binary } } = await image.encode({ mozjpeg })` or
they can first run
`await image.encode({ mozjpeg })` and then
`image.encodedWith.mozjpeg.binary`
2021-09-10 15:18:14 +02:00
914cdea41d Return encode result from Image.encode calls
Before this, there were one way to use the API:
call `await image.encode({ mozjpeg: {} })`
then use `encodedWith` by asserting that `mozjpeg` property exists on it

After adding return value to encode, people
will be able to use it like
`const { mozjpeg } = await image.encode({ mozjpeg: {} });`
which provides better type safety
2021-09-10 14:45:20 +02:00
6bfce29af6 Improve typing of Image.encode
Instead of returning `any` we're now returning the whole object.

Still from typing perspective, the API is not that
great since we don't have any type relation
between `encode` calls and `encodedWith` property. Maybe we can think about
returning directly from `encode` call
with the returned object having properties
that is supplied in `encode` calls

687cf5aae2 Bundle URL assets as dependencies
I've added support for `new URL(..., import.meta.url)` pattern accepted by many bundlers to wasm-bindgen and Emscripten, both for Wasm files as well as for side Workers autogenerated to support multithreading.

On the apps side like Squoosh this means we no longer have to manually specify URLs to be passed to wasm-bindgen or Emscripten init functions. In this PR I'm primarily doing just that - removing all the manual Wasm URL locators, as well as the associated logic.

One notable change on the build system side is that, in order for Wasm and multithreading-related Workers to be detected as dependencies, I'm now walking over `referencedFiles` in addition to `imports` when collecting list of dependencies in `getDependencies` function (client-bundle-plugin.js).

As a side effect, it also included other linked assets - images and CSS - which simplified quite a few caching lists in to-cache.ts as well. Instead of having to manually specify each asset that needs to be included, the logic is inverted and only few extra assets had to be excluded to keep the list of in items cached on the first load as low as it was before the change.

All in all, I think this simplification is worth it and even helped to accidentally uncover & fix one caching bug where WP2 regular JS was cached in addition to WP2 multithreaded JS simultaneously.

Few notes:
 - Lots of deprecated SIMD intrinsic warnings & errors in JPEG-XL -> Highway; had to suppress erorrs to make project build.
 - Moved couple of common link flags to cpp.Dockerfile (note: can't move `EXPORT_ES6` otherwise `configure` will fail).
 - MODULARIZE=1 is no longer necessary and implied by EXPORT_ES6.
 - EXPORT_NAME=... is no longer necessary in EXPORT_ES6.
 - Changed visdif to also use EXPORT_ES6 and ENVIRONMENT=node instead of generic JS.

f779e13bc8 Remove SIMD for now (#1025)
This is by no means a proper fix, but Chrome 91 (stable tomorrow) brings some breaking changes to SIMD, and I'd rather disable SIMD for now to avoid breaking Squoosh altogether once it hits stable, and work on a proper fix in a separate branch.

10c5082499 Add back a loader customization for full URL (#1016)
Emscripten uses dynamic `import(fullUrlOfTheMainJS)` in generated Workers.

It appears that upstream rollup-plugin-off-main-thread never handled this correctly, but we had a customization in Squoosh loader template that allowed those anyway, which I removed together with most other customizations in #1007, thus breaking Emscripten codecs.

This adds a hotfix back, but we need to fix this properly upstream too (TBD separately).

6117c9dd26 Update HQX to latest (#943)
I've played a bit and added a non-invasive change to the HQX - https://github.com/CryZe/wasmboy-rs/pull/1 - to work around the code size regression (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/74947) introduced in the latest Rust.

As a side benefit of the change, the build time also went down significantly and now takes only 1 minute altogether - including spawning Docker, fetching Cargo, building Wasm and optimising it with wasm-opt - instead of 15-20 minutes it took before.

P.S. h/t @CryZe for a very quick review & publish.

c7d156e8d7 Use UNALIGNED_ACCESS_IS_FAST for OxiPNG -> libdeflate
I only observed ~10-15% increase in perf on single-threaded bench, which isn't much, but no harm in adding flag anyway.

Fixes #833.

This is from the webpack build, but the old build failed to make this file work offline. It's the file that handles the "update available" stuff, which is why users using the old version aren't seeing the UI update. We can remove this file once everyone's off the old version.

## Dependencies
- Docker
## Example
See `example.html`
## API
### `int version()`
Returns the version of MozJPEG as a number. va.b.c is encoded as 0x0a0b0c
### `Uint8Array encode(std::string image_in, int image_width, int image_height, MozJpegOptions opts)`
Encodes the given image with given dimension to JPEG. Options looks like this:
```c++
struct MozJpegOptions {
int quality;
bool baseline;
bool arithmetic;
bool progressive;
bool optimize_coding;
int smoothing;
int color_space;
int quant_table;
bool trellis_multipass;
bool trellis_opt_zero;
bool trellis_opt_table;
int trellis_loops;
bool auto_subsample;
int chroma_subsample;
bool separate_chroma_quality;
int chroma_quality;
};
```

// Our JS should have been generated in

// resolve the main module via `../../..`.
//
// This might need updating if the generated structure changes on wasm-bindgen
// side ever in the future, but works well with bundlers today. The whole
// point of this crate, after all, is to abstract away unstable features
// and temporary bugs so that you don't need to deal with them in your code.
//
// # Note 2
// This could be a regular import, but then some bundlers complain about
// circular deps.
//
// Dynamic import could be cheap if this file was inlined into the parent,
// which would require us just using `../../..` in `new Worker` below,
// but that doesn't work because wasm-pack unconditionally adds
// "sideEffects":false (see below).
//
// OTOH, even though it can't be inlined, it should be still reasonably
// cheap since the requested file is already in cache (it was loaded by
// the main thread).

// way to get asset URLs relative to the module across various bundlers
// and browser, ideally we should switch to `import.meta.resolve`
// once it becomes a standard.
//
// Note: we could use `../../..` as the URL here to inline workerHelpers.js
// into the parent entry instead of creating another split point -
// this would be preferable from optimization perspective -
// however, Webpack then eliminates all message handler code
// because wasm-pack produces "sideEffects":false in package.json
// unconditionally.
//
// The only way to work around that is to have side effect code
// in an entry point such as Worker file itself.

//! This is a module that provides `malloc` and `free` for `libdeflate`.
//! These implementations are compatible with the standard signatures
//! but use Rust allocator instead of including libc one as well.
//!
//! Rust allocator APIs requires passing size and alignment to the
//! `dealloc` function. This is different from C API, which only
//! expects a pointer in `free` and expects allocators to take care of
//! storing any necessary information elsewhere.
//!
//! In order to simulate C API, we allocate a `size_and_data_ptr`
//! of size `sizeof(usize) + size` where `size` is the requested number
//! of bytes. Then, we store `size` at the beginning of the allocated
//! chunk (within those `sizeof(usize)` bytes) and return
//! `data_ptr = size_and_data_ptr + sizeof(usize)` to the calleer:
//!
//! [`size`][...actual data]
//! -^------------------ `size_and_data_ptr`
//! ---------^---------- `data_ptr`
//!
//! Then, in `free`, the caller gives us `data_ptr`. We can subtract
//! `sizeof(usize)` back and get the original `size_and_data_ptr`.
//! At this point we can read `size` back and call the Rust `dealloc`
//! for the whole allocated chunk.
//!
//! I've raised an upstream issue to hopefully make this easier in
//! future: https://github.com/ebiggers/libdeflate/issues/62

// This is one of the parts that work around Chromium incorrectly implementing postMessage:
// https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1075645
//
// rayon::ThreadPoolBuilder (used below) executes spawn handler to populate the worker pool,
// and then blocks the current thread until each worker unblocks its (opaque) lock.
//
// Normally, we could use postMessage directly inside the spawn handler to
// post module + memory + threadPtr to each worker, and the block the current thread.
//
// However, that bug means that postMessage is currently delayed until the next event loop,
// which will never spin since we block the current thread, and so the other workers will
// never be able to unblock us.
//
// To work around this problem, we:
// 1) Expose `worker_initializer` that returns module + memory pair (without threadPtr)
// that workers can be initialised with to become native threads.
// JavaScript can postMessage this pair in advance, and asynchronously wait for workers
// to acknowledge the receipt.
// 2) Create a global communication channel on the Rust side using crossbeam.
// It will be used to send threadPtr to the pre-initialised workers
// instead of postMessage.
// 3) Provide a separate `start_main_thread` that expects all workers to be ready,
// and just uses the provided channel to send `threadPtr`s using the
// shared memory and blocks the current thread until they're all grabbed.
// 4) Provide a `worker_initializer` that is expected to be invoked from various workers,
// reads one `threadPtr` from the shared channel and starts running it.
